Human Behavior and Complexity, Terry Cooke-Davies

In the second part of Terry Cooke-Davies’ book Aspects of Complexity there is a change of focus from practitioners to academics. The four chapters that are occupy our attention during week’s 8, 9, 10 and 11 are: –

· Part 2 – With Researchers and Students in Mind

· Chapter 8: Human Behavior and Complexity, Terry Cooke-Davies

· Chapter 9: Controlling Chaos? The Value and the Challenges of Applying Complexity Theory to Project Management, Kaye Remington and Roxanne Zolin

· Chapter 10: Systems Thinking and the Systems Movement, Peter Checkland and Terry Williams

· Chapter 11: Systems Engineering and Project Management, Andrew Daw

Accordingly, with you as a student in mind, it is now a good time for you to pay attention to the major assignment in this unit. In week 13 you are expected to submit the written assessment. There is 50% of the overall grade for this unit riding on your success with this assignment. The assessment criteria for the assignment can be found in the unit profile, however the first three criterion consists of: –

1. A description of the theories and ideas specific to complex project management? (15%)

2. An explanation of the causes, environments, and properties of complex projects? (15%)

3. A discussion of the tools and techniques to aid a project manager manage complex projects? (15%)

Therefore, 45% of the grade requires that you describe, explain and discuss things around complex projects. Next week we’ll discuss criterion 4 and 5. However, for the first three criterion the four chapters mentioned above are a very good basis of describing, explaining and discussing: –

· theories and ideas about complex project management

· causes, environment, and properties of complex projects

· the tools and techniques

Your task in this week’s discussion is for you to summarise what you intend to write regarding these points.
