Case WS 2013/14 After graduation you start a new job as export manager in the fishery company “Delicious Seafood Imports GmbH” based in Hamburg. The company buys and sells seafood all around the world. Your job is to check the quality of the products and sell the caught fish for the best price worldwide. Your salary and your bonus depend on the money you make by selling the fish. For each Euro/kg per fishing term that you can increase the sales price you will get a 25 000 Euro bonus. The main sorts of fish, especially caught in the Pacific, are tuna, cod and monkfish. After thorough examination of the fish that you recently caught you find out that the radiation level of the high quality seafood is far higher than expected, due to the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011. The contamination level of your fish is about 1100 Bq/kg. Normally you would sell the Pacific fish to the Tokyo fish market, where you could achieve an additional sales price of 10 Euro per kg fish. Unfortunately the maximum level of contamination for fish is 500 Bq/kg in Japan. Another option would be to sell the seafood to the European market where the permitted radiation level is normally 600 Bq/kg but was raised -due to the Fukushima nuclear disaster -up to 1250 Bq/kg in an emergency decree which is still valid. But the quality of the fish would suffer because of the long route of transport while shipping. Therefore and because of the high level of contamination, German fish dealers for example would only offer additional 0,50 Euro/kg. Another option you are thinking about is that “Delicious Seafood Imports GmbH” sells the maritime products to the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) in order to use it for international food donation programs as part of the development aid, e.g. for families to support their children with the essential vitamin D. The FAO´s maximum allowed level of contamination is like the level of the EU. The FAO would pay a price of 4 Euro/kg…
